 Best At Hiring

As the wars wind down, veterans are coming home looking for jobs. Some employers do a great job of hiring veterans and some do not. The Washington Post and Bright.com found that Walmart hires the most Army, Navy, and Air Force veterans while The Home Depot hires the most Marines. A recent report by The Washington Post shows the companies that are the best at hiring veterans. Their top five were: PepsiCo, General Electric, Valero Energy, AmerisourceBergen, and Caterpillar.

Here is the full list of companies compiled.

 Fitness Careers for Veterans

Many fitness clubs are reaching out to veterans to fill important job positions. Gold's Gym partnered with the Veterans Fitness Career College two years ago to assist veterans looking for jobs in the fitness industry. One of the top 100 military-friendly employers, 24 Hour Fitness publically lauds veterans for their ability to motivate and hires them whenever they can. Veterans also have access to the Salute You Scholarship, a program started by the American Council on Exercise which provides 1,000 veterans each year free materials, tutoring, and registration to become a certified personal trainer through the organization. For more on fitness career options, see this Military.com article and visit the Military.com Veteran Jobs Center for more veteran job tips and job postings.

 Creating a Winning Resume

If you have just left active duty, your resume may seem rather thin because you have not really done any homework on yourself. For starters, make sure you have a copy of all your evaluations. Stack them up and ensure that there are no gaps in service. If there is something you accomplished during one time period that did not continue through your entire tour, make sure you highlight it in your resume. Next, review your evaluations for relevant bragging points, and list those accomplishments on your resume. Also, be sure to look over your collateral duties. Are there any that relate to the job you want to do? Finally, look over your awards and list them with other accomplishments. For more tips, visit the University of Minnesota website, the VA Careers Blog, the VA for Vets website, VA's Veterans Employment Toolkit webpage, and the Military.com website.
